Swiss league punishes FC Sion to avoid FIFA ban

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:43 a.m. ET Dec. 30, 2011

GENEVA (AP) -The Swiss Football Association moved to avoid suspension from world football Friday by handing FC Sion a 36-point penalty in a long-running dispute over the club's fielding of ineligible players.

The Swiss FA said its decision to penalize Sion three points for every league game in which ineligible players played was a response to FIFA's threat to suspend all Swiss clubs, including FC Basel and the national side, from taking part in international matches.

Basel is due to meet Bayern Munich in the Champions League round of 16 on Feb. 22, a rare foray into the upper echelons of international football for a club from Switzerland.

FIFA had given the Swiss Football Association until Jan. 14, 2012, to discipline Sion or face suspension over the saga that began in 2009, when world football's governing body imposed a one-year transfer ban on the club for illegally signing goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary.

Sion, which ignored the transfer embargo and signed six players in the offseason, has doggedly contested FIFA's ruling in the courts despite facing increasingly harsh penalties from football authorities.

"The Swiss Football Association has today demanded from FIFA confirmation that the suspension will not now come into effect," the league said in a statement. "FIFA's answer is still being awaited."

FIFA said in a statement that it took note of the Swiss league's action and would consider it at an Emergency Committee meeting in early January.

The penalty for Sion falls short of FIFA's demand to also forfeit most of the club's results this season, as this would automatically have resulted in opposing sides gaining the points deducted from Sion, the league said.

The Swiss Football Association said Sion now stands last in the league table, with minus five points, but can continue to play in the country's cup competition. The points deduction may be challenged at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Video: New Verizon Wireless charge sparks outrage

>>> there's outrage over customer fees. starting next month verizon will charge you extra if you pay your bill online. nbc's pete williams has details. it's not going to go over well.

>> verizon is calling this a convenience fee , $2 for the convenience of paying wireless phone and internet bills directly to verizon online, on the company's website or by phone, but the company says there are many ways to avoid the fee. the new fee goes into effect in two weeks for verizon wireless , the largest wireless service provider . january 15th they'll be charged $2 each month extra if they go to the company's website or pay by phone, that's $2 each time the bill is paid.

>> it's annoying, one doesn't like to be pushed and i'm sure it sucks.

>> everybody's doing it, and i don't know what you can do about it but we don't like it.

>> it's a little bit unfair so it's going to affect how i think about verizon .

>> reporter: verizon wireless says there are many ways to avoid paying the $2 charge and says most customers already take advantage of them. the company will not charge the fee if customers who enroll in automatic billing from a credit, debit, atm or checking account or pay by mailing in a check, going to the verizon wireless store or kiosk to pay in person, logging onto their own online banks to pay the bill, using the company's gift or rebate cards or pay by electronic checking. word of the fee comes over a battle of the plan to raise fees for debit cards . three card issuers backed down from new charges in the face of customer protest. verizon wireless may be trying to push more customers into using the automatic billing option because the company gets its payments on time that way. verizon wireless says the fee is intended to offset what the company describes is the cost of handling monthly payments sent in online or by phone and the word of the new fee is just coming out now. the company says customers will be notified directly.

Candidate Bachmann's Iowa chairman quits, endorses Paul (Reuters)

DES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) ? Republican candidate Michele Bachmann's Iowa campaign chairman resigned on Wednesday and endorsed rival Ron Paul, six days before Iowa voters begin the nomination process to select the 2012 Republican presidential nominee.

Kent Sorenson, an Iowa state senator who had served as Bachmann's state campaign chairman for nearly a year, said he had decided to switch his support to Paul because the campaign had reached "a turning point."

"When the Republican establishment is going to be coming after Ron Paul, I thought it is my duty to come to his aid," Sorenson said, announcing his endorsement for the Texas congressman during a rally at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

Sorenson said in a statement that Paul was "easily the most conservative" member of the top tier in the race for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic President Barack Obama in elections in November next year.

"The fact that he doesn't take this decision lightly tells a great deal about the senator and Ron Paul," said Jesse Benton, Paul's national campaign chair.

Paul has a strong organization in the early voting state and is one of the favorites to win the Iowa caucuses vote on January 3.

Sorenson's defection gave the Paul campaign some respite from questions about his links to newsletters two decades ago that carried his name and contained racist, anti-homosexual and anti-Israel rants.

Soon after Paul took the stage at the rally late Wednesday, he was interrupted by a few protesters from the "Occupy Des Moines" movement.

"Freedom of speech. Ain't it wonderful?," Paul said, "We're all upset and we want a change in Washington. As a matter of fact, that's what our purpose is."

The protesters were escorted out.

Amazon says 2011 'best holiday ever' for Kindle (AP)

SEATTLE ? Online retailer Amazon says 2011 was the best holiday ever for its Kindle-brand e-readers and tablet computers.

Amazon.com Inc. said Thursday that people bought more than 1 million Kindles each week in December.

The company has never released specific sales figures for the Kindle. Since the launch of the first Kindle in 2007, this franchise has grown to include several e-readers and the Kindle Fire tablet.

The Kindle Fire is expected to be one of the first true competitors to Apple's iPad. Amazon says the Fire has been the best-selling product on its site since its introduction 13 weeks ago.

Even so, the iPad is still expected outsell all other tablets, including the $199 Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Inc.'s new $249 Nook Tablet. The iPad starts at $499.

Review: 'W.E.L.D.E.R.' leads parade of iPad gems

(AP)? So you just got an iPad for Christmas. You already have all the essentials loaded ? Facebook, Twitter, iBooks, whatever news app you prefer.

Now it's time to get serious and start learning what the iPad was really built for: games.

There are more than 26,000 iPad games available from Apple's App Store, with something for every imaginable taste. And the prices are so low you can build an impressive library for less than the cost of a single Xbox game. Here are some of my favorites from the last few months.

?"W.E.L.D.E.R." (Highline Games, $3.99): For the record, it stands for "Word Examination Laboratory for Dynamic Extraction and Reassessment," but never mind the strained acronym. What "W.E.L.D.E.R." really stands for is the iPad's most addictive word game, a clever combination of "Bejeweled," ''Boggle" and "Scrabble." The object is to slide letter tiles around an 8-by-8 grid, forming words of four or more letters. However, you won't get far unless you figure out how to combine score-multiplying gold tiles with the limited number of moves you're given. If you're burned out on "Words With Friends," let this provide your new crossword puzzle fix.

?"Infinity Blade II" (Chair Entertainment, $6.99): If you want to show off your new toy, there are few better demonstrations than this sword-fighting epic. It's a series of one-on-one battles in which dodging, parrying and blocking attacks are just as important as slashing your foes. This sequel adds some role-playing elements and more alternate paths to the goal, but the core attraction remains the same: bone-crunching combat in breathtaking environments.

?"Chocolate Fix" (ThinkFun, $2.99): Take nine candies ? three shapes, each in three colors ? and arrange them in a 3-by-3 box. If you're a Sudoku maven, that probably sounds simple. But at the expert level, the clues to which candy goes where are more abstract, making this innocent-looking brainteaser devilishly challenging. It's another elegant treat from the creators of "Rush Hour."

?"Bag It!" (Hidden Variable Studios, $1.99): It's another adventure in food packaging! This time, you're a clerk cramming groceries into a paper bag. The goal is to fill each bag as tightly as possible without breaking anything; if you put a watermelon on top of a carton of eggs, you're asking for trouble. The groceries themselves are endearingly anthropomorphized, making "Bag It!" one of the cutest puzzle games around.

?"Blueprint 3D" (FDG Entertainment, 99 cents): Each screen in this game is a seemingly random assortment of lines floating in three dimensions. When you rotate the space, you can see how some lines might fit together. Eventually, they snap in place to create a 2-D image of a familiar object ? a house, perhaps, or the Eiffel Tower. The 200-plus puzzles here aren't terribly demanding, but they're undeniably satisfying.

Finally, some essential games from earlier in 2011:

?"Jetpack Joyride" (Halfbrick Studios, 99 cents): Keep your hero airborne while avoiding lasers, missiles and other obstacles in this breathless race from the creators of "Fruit Ninja."

?"Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP" (Capybara Games, $4.99): The old-school point-and-click adventure gets a postmodern makeover.

?"Where's My Water?" (Disney, 99 cents): Help an alligator take a bath in this adorably goofy physics puzzler.

?"Ticket to Ride" (Days of Wonder, $6.99): The best board-game translation on the iPad is this suspenseful race to build cross-country railroads.

Reuters Columnist: Economy Would Be Better Off If Fed-Ex Workers Had a Union Like UPS- 12/28/11

12/27/2011

By Doug Cunningham

Reuters columnist David Kay Johnston says if it were as easy to organize a union at Fed-Ex as it is at UPS, workers and the economy would be better off with the union advantage. Johnston says Fed-Ex has a special exemption under labor law and isn't covered under the National Labor relations Act. The UPS Teamsters union workers earn $12-18 more per hour in wages and benefits than Fed-Ex workers do.

[David Cay Johnston]: "The biggest problem in our economy right now is lack of demand. Workers don't make enough money, and enough workers don't have jobs to sustain the economy. A big reason for that is that companies like Fed-Ex that get special treatment have persuaded Congress that making them be on equal footing with their competitors would damage the economy overall."

Johnston says the economy would be better off if Fed-Ex workers earned more ass well.

LG announces ICS upgrades to begin in Q2 2012

Following the footsteps of Samsung and Sony, LG has come forth with details on which devices will be getting Android 4.0 -- also known as Ice Cream Sandwich -- and when we can begin expecting those upgrades to roll out. The phone manufacturer made its official announcement via its Facebook page, stating that several of its 2011 models will be on the receiving end of ICS starting in the second and third quarters of next year, with a full-scale rollout occurring sometime afterward.

In the second quarter we should expect to see updates for the LG Optimus LTE, Prada 3.0, Optimus 2X, Optimus Sol, myTouch Q and the Eclipse. Fast forwarding to the third quarter, the Optimus 3D, Optimus Black, Optimus Big, Optimus Q2 and the Optimus EX will all be lucky recipients. As can be expected, LG was careful not to lump carrier-branded devices into the mix here, as a large portion of the timing depends on the carrier's testing procedures. Head on past the break to see the full statement by LG.

Europe debt crisis top story of 2011

  • In this July 18, 2011 photo, specialist William Krumm works at his post on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. World stock markets climbed Friday, July 22, 2011, as investors signaled their approval of a massive new bailout plan for Greece and broader measures to tackle the continent's debt problems.

NEW YORK -- Europe took the financial world on a stomach-churning ride in 2011.

The rising threat of default by heavily indebted European countries spread fear across financial markets and weighed on economies worldwide. As the year came to a close, banks and investors nervously watched Europe's political and financial leaders scramble to prevent the 17-nation eurozone from breaking apart.

Several of the other biggest business stories of the year highlighted the global economy's linkages: A British phone-hacking scandal shook the foundations of Rupert Murdoch's U.S.-based media empire; a nuclear disaster in Japan stymied auto plants in the U.S. and beyond; and the price of gasoline surged because of unrest in the Middle East and growing demand in Asia and Latin America.

In the U.S., political squabbling led to the first credit downgrade for government debt, the economy suffered its fourth straight disappointing year and Apple founder Steve Jobs died.

The European financial crisis was chosen as the top business story of the year by business editors at The Associated Press. The sluggish U.S. economy came in second, followed by the death of Jobs.

1 EUROPEAN FINANCIAL CRISIS

The government-debt crunch rattled Europe's financial system and weighed on the global economy. Portugal became the third European country, after Greece and Ireland the year before, to require a bailout as its borrowing costs soared. And investors grew worried that countries with much larger debts, such as Spain and Italy, would also need help.

Financial markets were volatile all year as hopes rose and then were dashed that forceful steps would be taken to prevent the financial crisis from becoming Europe's version of the 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers, which triggered a global financial panic and deepened the Great Recession.

Banks worried that they or their partners wouldn't be able to cover losses if governments defaulted, so they cut back on lending. European governments, facing ever higher borrowing costs, reined in spending -- a policy response that is expected to stunt much-needed economic growth. Analysts estimate the slowdown in Europe, America's No. 1 trading partner, will cut U.S. economic growth next year.

2 BAD U.S. ECONOMY: YEAR 4

The Great Recession may have ended, but the economic recovery continued to disappoint. For the first six months of the year, the economy grew at an annual rate of just 0.9 percent. Growth improved to a 2 percent rate in the third quarter and a 3 percent growth rate is forecast for the fourth quarter.

Still, 21/2 years after economists say the recession ended, 25 million people remain unemployed or unable to find full-time work. The unemployment rate fell from 9 percent in October to 8.6 percent in November, providing a hopeful sign. Yet the housing market remained burdened by foreclosures and falling prices in many metropolitan areas. How to fix the economy became the top campaign issue for Republican presidential contenders.

3 STEVE JOBS DIES

The college dropout who helped popularize the personal computer and created the iPod, iPhone and iPad, died on Oct. 5. That was two months after Apple Inc., which Jobs started in a Silicon Valley garage in 1976, briefly surpassed Exxon Mobil Corp. as the most valuable publicly traded company in the world.

Jobs cultivated a countercultural sensibility and a minimalist design ethic. He rolled out one sensational product after another, even during the recession and as his health was failing. He first helped change computers from a geeky hobbyist's obsession to a necessity of modern life. In recent years, he upended the music business with the iPod and iTunes, transformed the smart phone market with the iPhone and created the tablet market with the iPad.

4 THE U.S. CREDIT DOWNGRADE

The inability of political leaders to come up with a long-term plan to reduce the federal budget deficit led the credit rating agency Standard & Poor's to take away Uncle Sam's sterling AAA credit rating for the first time. The political bickering enraged voters, spooked investors and led to the lowest consumer confidence level of the year. But the nation's long-term borrowing costs fell after the crisis. The reason: U.S. debt still looks safer to investors than almost everything else, especially European debt.

5 RUPERT MURDOCH AND THE HACKING SCANDAL

The man whose worldwide media empire thrives on covering scandal became the center of a dramatic one. A British tabloid newspaper owned by Murdoch's News Corp., which also owns Fox News and The Wall Street Journal, hacked the phone of a murdered schoolgirl. Murdoch was not charged with a crime, but an investigation by British authorities raised questions about Murdoch's ability to run his worldwide media empire. News Corp. fired several executives and closed the newspaper at the center of the scandal, the News of the World.

6 JAPAN EARTHQUAKE

An earthquake and tsunami that crippled the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear reactor, owned by Tokyo Electric Power Co., cut off supplies of crucial Japanese parts and idled factories thousands of miles away. Auto companies, especially Toyota and Honda, were hit hardest. Inventory of certain models, especially hybrids, fell short at dealerships, reducing sales and sending retail prices higher. The worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl led countries around the world to reconsider nuclear power. Germany decided to abandon nuclear by 2022.

7 GASOLINE PRICES HIT ANNUAL RECORD

The retail price of gasoline averaged $3.53 per gallon for the year, eclipsing the 2008 record of $3.24 per gallon. Americans drove less and switched to more fuel- efficient cars, but it wasn't enough to offset the higher prices. A bigger percentage of household income went into the gas tank in 2011 than any year since 1981. Economists say the high prices shaved half a percentage point off U.S. economic growth.

8 SOCIAL MEDIA IPOs TAKE OFF

Shares of the business social networking site LinkedIn more than doubled when it went public in May, recalling the froth of the dot-com boom. Linked- In was followed by large IPOs from online radio company Pandora Media, online discount site Groupon and social gaming site Zynga. But the market is treacherous: shares of Pandora, Groupon and Zynga all traded below their offering prices soon after they were listed. Market anticipation is high for a Facebook IPO in 2012.

9 OCCUPY WALL STREET

On Sept. 17, several hundred protesters gathered at a small plaza about a block from the New York Stock Exchange. They slept in tents, ate donated meals and protested income inequality and the influence of money in politics. The movement inspired protesters around the world who camped in city centers and business hubs to complain about unemployment, CEO pay and a decline in upward social mobility.

10 THE DOWNFALL OF MF GLOBAL AND JON CORZINE

The former governor, senator and co-chairman of Goldman Sachs lost control of a small brokerage firm he agreed to run in 2010. Saddled with huge debt and risky bets on European bonds, MF Global was forced to file for bankruptcy protection on Halloween after trading partners and investors got spooked. It was soon discovered that $1.2 billion in customer money was missing. Corzine told Congress he had no idea where the money went.

Official Condemns Statement by Israeli Mayor of Jerusalem
Date : 24/12/2011 Time : 11:54
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://english.wafa.ps/index.php?action=detail&id=18476

JERUSALEM, December 24, 2011 (WAFA) - Ahmad Rwaidy, an advisor on Jerusalem
affairs in the office of President Mahmoud Abbas, Saturday condemned
statements by West Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat who called for ceding
municipal control over some Arab neighborhoods in East Jerusalem.

Rwaidy told WAFA that Barkat?s ?racist and political? statements aim to
cancel residency in Jerusalem for tens of thousands of Palestinians living
within the municipality border, and therefore decrease Palestinian presence
in Jerusalem by 15%.

He condemned an Israeli plan, known as E1, to build a settlement linking Ma?aleh
Adumim settlement to Jerusalem, which will effectively separate the north of
the West Bank from the south, as well as isolate Jerusalem from its Arab
surroundings with a ring of settlements.

Israel already started infrastructure preparations to implement E1 project
and plans to expel Jahaleen Arab Bedouins who live in the area to start the
construction.

(AP) ? A fire tore through the home of an advertising executive in a tony neighborhood along the Connecticut shoreline Sunday, killing her three children and both of her parents on Christmas morning.

Madonna Badger and a male acquaintance were able to escape from the house as it was engulfed by flames, said Stamford Police Sgt. Paul Guzda. But Badger's three daughters ? a 10-year-old and 7-year-old twins ? perished in the fire, Guzda said.

He said Badger's parents, who were visiting for the holiday, also died.

Neighbors awoke to the sound of screaming shortly before 5 a.m. and rushed outside to help, but they could only watch in horror as flames devoured the grand home in the pre-dawn darkness and the shocked, injured survivors were led away from the house.

"It is a terrible, terrible day," Mayor Michael Pavia told reporters at the scene of the fire. "There probably has not been a worse Christmas day in the city of Stamford."

Badger, an ad executive in the fashion industry, is the founder of New York City-based Badger & Winters Group. A supervisor at Stamford Hospital said she was treated and discharged by Sunday evening.

Property records show she bought the five-bedroom, waterfront Victorian home for $1.7 million last year. The house is situated in Shippan Point, a wealthy neighborhood that juts into Long Island Sound.

The male acquaintance who also escaped the blaze was a contractor who was doing work on the home, Guzda said. He was also hospitalized but his condition was not released.

Police officers drove Badger's husband, Matthew Badger, from New York City to Stamford on Sunday morning. Badger's parents lived in Southbury, Conn., Guzda said.

Firefighters knew there were other people in the home but could not get to them because the flames were too large and the heat too intense, said Acting Fire Chief Antonio Conte, his voice cracking with emotion.

"It's never easy. That's for sure," he said. "I've been on this job 38 years ... not an easy day."

Conte said fire officials don't yet know the cause of the blaze and likely won't get clues for a few days until fire marshals can enter the structure.

By Sunday evening, the roof of the blackened house had largely collapsed.

A neighbor, Sam Cingari Jr., said he was awakened by the sound of screaming and saw that the house was engulfed by flames.

"We heard this screaming at 5 in the morning," he said. "The whole house was ablaze and I mean ablaze."

Cingari said he did not know his neighbors, who he said bought the house last year and were renovating it.

Charles Mangano, who lives nearby, said his wife woke him up and alerted him to the fire. He ran outside to see if he could help and saw a number of fire trucks in front of the house.

"I heard someone yell 'Help, help, help me!' and I started sprinting up my driveway," Mangano told The Advocate of Stamford.

He told the newspaper he saw a barefoot man wearing boxers and a woman being taken out of the house. The outdoor temperature at the time was below freezing, according to the National Weather Service.

The woman said, "My whole life is in there," Mangano said. "They were both obviously in a state of shock."

Stamford, a city of 117,000 residents, is about 25 miles northeast of New York City.

Badger was the creative mind behind major advertising campaigns for leading fashion brands, including the iconic Marky Mark underwear ads for Calvin Klein.

Raised in Kentucky, Badger began her career working as a graphic designer in the art department of Esquire magazine. Before starting her own company, she worked as an art director for several magazines and CRK, the in-house advertising agency for designer Calvin Klein.

Badger & Winters has worked with Proctor & Gamble, CoverGirl, A/X Armani Exchange, Emanuel Ungaro and Vera Wang, among other high-profile corporations. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? HBO Sub, a subsidiary of U.S. cable network HBO, and Dutch cable company Ziggo HBO Netherland won EU approval on Wednesday to set up a Dutch pay-TV services joint venture.

The European Commission, the EU competition watchdog, said the deal would not lead to any competition issues.

"On the contrary, the proposed transaction will increase competition in the acquisition of pay-TV content and in the wholesale of pay-TV channels in the Netherlands," it said in a statement.

Romney, Gingrich focus of GOP race with Cain exit (AP)

MANCHESTER, N.H. ? With the implosion of Herman Cain's campaign amid accusations of adultery and sexual harassment, the once-crowded 2012 Republican presidential field appears to be narrowing to a two-man race between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.

GOP voters have one month before the leadoff Iowa caucuses. Gingrich is showing strength in the latest Iowa poll, while Romney is strong in New Hampshire, site of the first primary.

Romney has maintained a political network since his failed 2008 presidential bid, especially in New Hampshire. Gingrich, whose campaign nearly collapsed several months ago, is relying on his debate performances and the good will he built up with some conservatives as a congressional leader in the 1980s and 1990s.

Gingrich's efforts appear to be paying off in Iowa. A Des Moines Register poll released late Saturday found the former House speaker leading the GOP field with 25 percent support, ahead of Ron Paul at 18 percent and Romney at 16.

Cain's suspension of his campaign Saturday, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry's continued struggles to make headway with voters, have focused the party's attention on Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, and Gingrich, a one-time congressman from Georgia. They offer striking contrasts in personality, government experience and campaign organization.

Their political philosophies and differences are a bit harder to discern. Both men have changed their positions on issues such as climate change. And Gingrich, in particular, is known to veer into unusual territories, such as child labor practices.

Romney has said he differs with Gingrich on child labor laws. Gingrich recently suggested that children as young as nine should work as assistant school janitors, to earn money and learn work ethics.

Cain's announcement in Atlanta offered a possible opening for Romney or Gingrich to make a dramatic move in hopes of seizing momentum for the sprint to the Jan. 3 Iowa caucus. Neither man did. They appear willing to play things carefully and low-key for now.

At a town hall meeting in New York sponsored by tea party supporters, Gingrich declined to characterize the race as a direct contest between himself and Romney. Any of the remaining GOP contenders could stage a comeback before the Iowa caucuses, he said. "I'm not going to say that any of my friends can't suddenly surprise us," Gingrich said.

But once high-flying contenders such as Perry and Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota have not managed to bounce back so far, despite weeks of trying.

Cain's once-prospering campaign was undone by numerous allegations of sexual wrongdoing.

Gingrich, twice divorced and now married to a woman with whom he had an extramarital affair, has been the most obvious beneficiary of Cain's precipitous slide.

But Perry, Bachmann and possibly others are likely to make a play for Cain's anti-establishment tea party backing. Time is running short for them to establish themselves as the top alternative to Romney, who has long been viewed with suspicion by many conservatives.

McCready didn't have OK to hide at house

By the time authorities took country singer Mindy McCready's 5-year-old son from her and into custody on Friday evening, one thing had already become apparent: her life has come to resemble a bad country song.

  1. More Entertainment stories
    1. Stars come out for 'New Year's Eve'

Everyone who's anyone is in this new movie. Plus: "Biggest Loser" crowns a winner; "The Help" hits DVD.

    2. Year of the Hunk: Can Clooney, Pitt save Oscars?
    3. Kardashians fire back at 'Teen Mom' Farrah
    4. News anchor sorry for dashing kids? Santa dream
    5. Reader: Conrad Murray won't serve enough time

Since her emergence in the mid-1990s as a honey-voiced success story out of Nashville, McCready has been increasingly known for her personal troubles instead of her music.

This week's custody battle, where McCready took her son from his Florida home, was the latest in her brushes with the law.

Florida Department of Children and Families spokeswoman Terri Durdaller wrote in an email Saturday that her agency was working with Arkansas state officials to bring McCready's son, Zander, back to his legal guardian, McCready's mother.

Officials say the boy is safe and in good health after he and McCready were found in a bedroom closet of an unoccupied Arkansas home.

"Zander is in Arkansas and we continue to arrange his swift arrival back to Florida," Durdaller wrote.

In Arkansas, Cleburne County Sheriff Marty Moss said Saturday that McCready didn't have permission to be in the unoccupied summer home where she was found Friday evening with her son. Authorities continue to investigate, he said.

The sheriff's office said in a news release Saturday that McCready had been a visitor to the area. Authorities located her after receiving a report of "possible occupants in a summer home that was supposed to be unoccupied," the news release said.

Moss told The Associated Press on Saturday that he doesn't expect that McCready will face any charges for being at the unoccupied home.

Gayle Inge, McCready's mother, was tearful Friday night.

"I'm real excited that he's safe," she said. "But I can't explain what this is like. We feel for Mindy and we feel for Zander."

Inge said that her son ? McCready's half-brother ? texted McCready, who responded with a text that said her mother would never see her again.

"I want to wrap my arms around her and tell her that I love her," Inge said.

McCready, who turned 36 on Wednesday, did not respond to emails Friday and Saturday.

Authorities say McCready took the boy during a visit late last month to her father's Florida home, where she was allowed to visit the boy. McCready's parents are divorced.

A Florida judge signed an order Thursday telling authorities to take the boy into custody and return him. It's not yet clear whether the singer could face criminal charges.

McCready said earlier in the week that she would not bring her son back from Tennessee, where she has a home, despite violating the custody arrangement. She told the AP that her son had suffered abuse at her mother's house, a claim that Inge vehemently denies.

"I'm doing all this to protect Zander, not stay out of trouble," McCready wrote in an email to the AP on Thursday. "I don't think I should be in trouble for protecting my son in the first place."

McCready told the AP Wednesday night she was in Tennessee and couldn't travel because she is seven months pregnant with twins.

McCready and her mother have had a long custody battle over the boy.

McCready found fame in the mid-1990s when she moved to Nashville at the age of 18, armed with only her karaoke tapes. Her first album, "Ten Thousand Angels," sold two million copies.

Her next four albums weren't as successful. Her personal troubles began encroaching on her professional success. According to her website, she suffers from severe depression.

In August, she filed a libel suit against her mother and the National Enquirer's parent company, American Media Inc., over a story published in the tabloid newspaper that quoted Inge.

And in 2008, McCready was admitted to a hospital after police said she cut her wrists and took several pills in a suicide attempt.

Here's The Huntsman Campaign's Awesome ... - Business Insider

Tim Miller, a spokesman for Jon Huntsman's presidential campaign, had?this response when asked if his candidate would participate in the?Dec. 27 Newsmax debate moderated by Donald Trump:

"Lol. We look forward to watching Mitt and Newt suck-up to The Donald?with a big bowl of popcorn," he said in an email to Business Insider.

Huntsman declined to meet with Trump at his New York offices, his campaign said, though?Trump said last month that it was he who declined to meet Huntsman.

Deciding to sit-out the debate may help Huntsman with his message that?he is the only adult in the GOP field.?Another reason is more practical ? Huntsman is wagering everything on?New Hampshire, and leaving the state for even a day to debate in Iowa?detracts from time he can spend wooing Granite State voters.

His decision to withdraw from the CNN Nevada debate to protest the?state's early primary was well-received in New Hampshire, where he is?just beginning to show signs of life ? breaking double-digits there for the first time in a?poll released earlier this week.

US regulators approve Google's AdMeld acquisition (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? The U.S. Justice Department approved Google's acquisition of online advertising service AdMeld after concluding the deal wouldn't diminish competition in one of the Internet's most lucrative marketing niches.

The decision announced Friday clears the way for Google Inc. to take control of AdMeld six months after the companies agreed to the deal. Google said it plans to take control of AdMeld within the next few days, although the two companies' products will remain separate for a while longer.

It's the fourth time since 2007 that that the U.S. government has taken a close look at a Google acquisition to determine if it would stifle competition or drive up prices. Google has gained regulatory approval in each instance. In 2008, though, Google backed out of a proposed partnership with Yahoo Inc. to avoid a legal battle with the Justice Department.

The Justice Department is still reviewing Google's proposed takeover of cell phone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. That $12.5 billion deal is the biggest in Google's 13-year history.

The Federal Trade Commission is in the midst of a broader inquiry into whether Google has been abusing its dominance of Internet search to make it harder for people to find rival services and apply pressure on advertisers to pay higher prices. Google has consistently predicted that investigation will be resolved in its favor.

Google hasn't disclosed how much it is paying for AdMeld, a New York company that works with websites to help them figure out how to make the most money from the amount of space they have available for display ads. It's a steadily growing field of advertising that emphasizes photos, video and illustrations instead of Google's specialty of distributing text-based commercial links alongside search results.

AdMeld plays a relatively small role in display advertising. Its revenue last year totaled $30 million, according to the Justice Department. Google generated revenue of about $29 billion last year and analysts expect it to surpass $38 billion in revenue this year. Most of Google's revenue still comes from search advertising.

In an attempt to diversify beyond search advertising, Google bought DoubleClick for $3.2 billion in 2008. That deal is turning display advertising into a major moneymaker for Google, but the company's market share in the segment still lags behind Facebook and Yahoo, according to the research firm eMarketer Inc.

That apparently helped sway the Justice Department to approve the AdMeld deal.

"The investigation determined that web publishers often rely on multiple display advertising platforms and can move business among them in response to changes in price or the quality of ad placements," the Justice Department's antitrust division said in a statement.

Google's shares rose $8.14, or 1.3 percent, to $621.91 in afternoon trading.
