KANSAS CITY, Mo. - It was a special night at Kauffman Stadium on Thursday for a newlywed couple from Iowa.
Jennifer and David Bachman, both 29, drove six hours just to watch David's Twins take on the Royals. The tickets were a surprise from Jennifer.
"If anyone deserves a special week, VIP treatment, it's definitely him," Jennifer said.
They met only seven months ago. Six weeks into their relationship, David was diagnosed with cancer.
"(I had) nine weeks of chemotherapy, which was not exactly easy," David said. "It was rough on everybody."
For some, cancer may have caused some hesitation, but not for Jennifer.
"He's special," Jennifer said. "He's the one. You don't run from the one."
Two months ago, David finished his first stint of chemo, and the couple got married in Vegas to celebrate.
But his last doctor's exam revealed the cancer wasn't gone, and David will need to have extensive surgery.
"I tend to worry about stuff a lot and maybe look at things in a negative light," David said. "My wife always tries to keep me positive."
The surgery is one of the reasons Jennifer planned the surprise.
"I wanted to make this next week before his next surgery, something to look forward to instead of dread," Jennifer said.
Making the night extra special was a signed baseball from Royals pitcher Bruce Chen, and a surprise visit from Slugger.
"I could not have done this without her," David said. "She was there every single day I had chemo .... She's been there for my surgeries, she's been there anytime I need someone to lean on."
David goes into surgery on Thursday, but not before one more Twins game on Tuesday.
