China factories see sluggish start in 2012: HSBC PMI (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's factory activity likely fell for a third successive month in January, suggesting Beijing's pro-growth policies will remain in place despite early signs that the downward drift is slowing, a survey of purchasing managers showed on Friday.

The HSBC flash manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI), the earliest indicator of China's industrial activity, stood at 48.8 in January, a three-month high and a slight improvement on the 48.7 final reading of the December index.

Turnarounds in sub-indexes measuring new export orders, backlogs of work and stocks of finished goods were all signs of strengthening activity, though the overall reading stayed below the 50 level -- which demarcates expansion from contraction -- where it has languished for most of the last seven months.

New orders overall ticked to a three-month high, but failed by a narrow margin to get back above the 50 level.

Areas of concern for investors linger beside the bright spots though, with the overall output index signaling contraction at a faster rate in January than December -- a trend also reflected in the stocks and quantities of purchases.

"The most vulnerable firms are the all-important, highly externalized ones in the manufacturing sector -- especially the smaller firms, which the HSBC flash is weighted towards," Jeremy Stevens, China economist with Standard Bank in Beijing said.

"These smaller firms have long tentacles reaching deeply into the broader economy. The data confirms that many have been forced into lock-down mode, favoring cash preservation over revenue generation," he wrote in a note to clients.

Deteriorating demand from China's biggest trading partners in the European Union and the United States helped drag growth in the world's second-biggest economy down to its lowest in 2-1/2 years in the final quarter of 2011.

The new export orders sub-index, however, managed to bounce to 51.1 from a three-month low.

That followed a run of recent official data that showed a surprising uptick in industrial output growth to 12.8 percent in December 2011 from a year ago and a year-on-year 18.1 percent jump in retail sales.

But official data has also shown a fall in fixed asset investment growth and a further slowdown in the rate of property investment that has been a key driver of economic expansion.

Elsewhere in Asia, Japanese manufacturers remained pessimistic about business conditions for the second straight month in January amid Europe's debt crisis and the slowing global outlook, a Reuters poll showed on Friday.

But manufacturing sentiment is seen bottoming out over the next three months, according to the poll.

SLOWER GROWTH, POLICY ACTION

The PMI survey did nothing to turn Qu Hongbin, chief China economist at HSBC, from the view that more fine-tuning of economic policy should be expected from the Chinese government.

"The third consecutive below-50 reading of the manufacturing PMI suggested that growth is likely to moderate further," he said in a statement accompanying the index.

"Despite the upside surprise of industrial production growth in December, the ongoing slowdown of investment and exports implies more headwinds to growth and likely destocking pressures for manufacturers in the coming months. We expect more policy easing to stabilize growth," Qu said.

Economists forecast a fifth-successive quarter of slower Chinese GDP growth in the first three months of 2012, easing further from the 8.9 percent of Q4 2011. Many expect the year ahead to deliver the slowest overall growth in a decade.

The pullback in activity has fuelled expectations that the government will take more forceful measures to bolster growth and save jobs, beyond the so-called fine-tuning it began to implement in October, in the face of a festering European debt crisis and a sharp slowdown in the domestic property sector.

Beijing reduced the amount of cash that banks have to hold as reserves in November for the first time in three years in a bid to shore up cooling economic activity and maintain a steady supply of credit to companies and consumers.

That 50 basis point cut to 21 percent is forecast by economists to be followed by up to 200 bps more throughout the course of 2012, a Reuters poll showed on Thursday.

The January readings from the HSBC flash PMI -- based on up to 90 percent of total responses to a monthly survey -- are likely to have been muddied by the Lunar New Year holidays, which occur earlier than usual in 2012.

Report: PSU fired Paterno over lack of action

In his first public comments since being fired two months ago, former Penn State coach Paterno told the Washington Post he "didn't know which way to go" after an assistant coach came to him in 2002 saying he had seen retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky sexually abusing a boy, the Post reported on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar, File)

(AP) ? Penn State's trustees agonized over the future of legendary football coach Joe Paterno but ultimately decided to fire the Hall of Famer in part over what they said was his failure to go to authorities with a report of alleged sexual assault of a child by an assistant coach nearly a decade ago, according to a report published Thursday in The New York Times.

Some of the 13 trustees interviewed by the Times (http://nyti.ms/AcHOxv ) said they were also troubled by Paterno greeting fans and supporters on his front lawn ? and leading them in school cheers ? just after the release of a scathing grand jury report detailing child sex abuse allegations against retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

The trustees said they were also concerned about Paterno's ability to lead the team during the scandal that also resulted in the ouster of university President Graham Spanier, but most jarring was the feeling the coach had failed to do enough after learning of a 2002 incident involving Sandusky and a boy in an on-campus shower.

"Every adult has a responsibility for every other child in our community. ...We have a responsibility for ensuring that we can take every effort that's within our power not only to prevent further harm to that child, but to every other child," said trustee Kenneth Frazier.

The alleged 2002 shower assault ultimately resulted in charges against two university officials, athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz. They're charged with failing to report suspected child abuse and perjury related to their testimony before the grand jury.

Paterno's attorney defended the coach's actions in a statement, saying Paterno passed on a report about an alleged assault to his superiors at the university believing they would investigate and act appropriately.

Sandusky is charged with sexually assaulting 10 young boys he met through The Second Mile, a charity he founded in 1977. He denies the allegations.

Sunk Costs In Investing

Sunk costs in investing are very close to the phenomenon knows as ?anchoring.?

If you buy a stock at $10 ? and it sinks to $5you are faced with 3 choices:

1. buy more at a lower price ? average down

2. sell your loser

3. do nothing and hope it rises phoenix like back to your cost basis.

All of these decisions will be made with sunk costs and anchoring involved. If you buy more you may think that you should get back to your cost basis ? and the fact that you already have an investment at $10 will fixate you on that level. You will think ?I can double my money on the new investment and break even on the original? You are dealing with the sunk cost ? and you have anchored yourself to the $10 price tag.

Similarly, if you decide to do nothing ? you may just be waiting for the company to get back to where you started. You are anchored at the original price.

Only the sale at a sure loss is a decision where you have weighed the sunk cost ? thrown off the anchor and moved on.

In hedge funds and personal accounts ? this is a somewhat easier decision to make ? because you can recycle the capital easily and move on.

In venture firms, it is much harder for a number of reasons.

Firstly, venture investors mark their books ? usually at the last round of financing ? so down rounds are a no ? no. It makes it seem like the company is not doing well ? and makes it harder potentially to raise the next fund.

Secondly, venture investments are illiquid, so simply calling a bad investment a sunk cost is more akin to calling it a permanent loss of capital. If it is a small company and not going in the right direction ? it is very hard to get anything back.

Thirdly, there is the reputation or signaling issue to deal with. If you abandon the investment as a VC ? what signal does it send to potential other investors? What does it do to your reputation with potential partners in the future?

Finally, and I think this is the biggest one ? since venture funds do not recycle capital ? any investment ? no matter how bad it is going, always has an option value. Think of it as a lottery ticket. It doesn?t happen often, but if a company successfully pivots and becomes a winner ? you want to hold onto the lottery ticket. In the public markets ? you can sell back your lottery ticket. In venture, you buy it, you keep it. So why give it up?

Of course this last point leads to a highly skewed return profile for venture investments ? generally, they are either home runs or strike outs ? with very little in the middle. Public markets are exactly the opposite ? because there is neither institutional anchoring nor a sunk cost problem in the public markets ? but these are structurally built into the VC model.

Williams, Djokovic into 3rd round in Australia (AP)

MELBOURNE, Australia ? Serena Williams was only two points from her 500th career match win when she tumbled to the court in the second round of the Australian Open.

It's OK, she thought, it's the good ankle. After sitting and watching Barbora Zahlavova Strycova's shot float out to end the penultimate rally, Williams got up and whipped a backhand winner down the line on match point to move into the third round with a 6-0, 6-4 victory on Thursday.

It improved her career record to 500-104 in tour matches and it was her 16th consecutive match win at Melbourne Park, where she has won five of her 13 Grand Slam titles.

"It's totally fine. It was my good ankle, so I'm good," she said, playing down concern that the fall had aggravated the left ankle sprain which hampered her preparation for the season's first major. "There was no extra pain. I twisted it. But it's all taped up, so the tape really, really helped."

She'd earlier put it down to just having "wobbly ankles."

"I wasn't meant to be a ballerina or anything," she told a post-match TV interview. It seems she was meant to be a tennis pro. Her older sister, Venus, has a win-loss record of 589-147 but is missing the Australian Open to recover from illness.

"I knew I had to get there too, because I do everything she does," said Williams, "It's great, it's like the ultimate."

Not quite.

"The first thing I asked, of course, 'Is there anyone that achieved a thousand?'" There's been two: Martina Navratilova had a career record 1,442-219, and Chris Evert retired with a 1,309-146 record.

"I never will get there either, but it's really cool," Williams said. "Five hundred is a lot of matches to play, let alone to win."

Williams won the Australian Open in 2009 and 2010 but didn't get to defend her title in 2011 because she was injured.

Novak Djokovic won the last men's title to kick off a stunning season, which started with a 41-match winning streak and finished with three of the four majors and the No. 1 ranking.

His 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 win over Santiago Giraldo of Colombia on Thursday was his 16th in a row in majors and keeps him on track to become only the fifth man in the Open era to win three consecutive Grand Slam singles tournaments.

Sixth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who lost the 2008 Australian final to Djokovic, advanced 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 over Ricardo Mello of Brazil, while No. 5 David Ferrer struggled early against American Ryan Sweeting before coming back to win 6-7 (4), 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3

No. 9 Janko Tipsarevic, No. 23 Milos Raonic of Canada and No. 27 Juan Ignacio Chela also progressed. Frenchman Michael Llodra beat No. 32 Alex Bogomolov Jr. 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 5-7, 6-4 and Portugal's Frederico Gil beat No. 26 Marcel Granollers in four sets.

On the women's side, No. 2 Petra Kvitova scraped into the third round with a nervous 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win over Carla Suarez Navarro.

Kvitova, who lost in the first round at the U.S. Open in the first major after winning Wimbledon, lost the second set and was down a break in the third before recovering to beat the Spaniard.

"In the beginning it was OK but I made many, many, many mistakes," Kvitova said of her 48 unforced errors. "It's part of my game but it's too many. It was very tough to get back in the third set."

Maria Sharapova, one of the three former champions in the women's draw, reached the third round after just two hours on court in two matches.

The 2008 champion had a 6-0, 6-1 second-round win over U.S. qualifier Jamie Hampton in 64 minutes.

Sharapova did not play in any warmup events and spent nearly two weeks in Melbourne ahead of the season's first major while she rested an injured left ankle.

"It was more about getting my feet going ... worrying about myself," Sharapova said. "Yeah, started my preparations in the offseason a little late, took a bit of extra time in practice instead of rushing into a tournament."

She'll meet No. 30 Angelique Kerber, who beat Canada's Stephanie Dubois 7-5, 6-1.

Seventh-seeded Vera Zvonareva, a two-time semifinalist at Melbourne Park, had a 6-1, 7-6 (3) over Lucie Hradecka . No. 21 Ana Ivanovic also advanced, beating Dutch player Michaella Krajicek 6-2, 6-3.

Three seeded players were ousted, with China's Zheng Jie beating No. 23 Roberta Vinci, Sara Errani beating No. 29 Nadia Petrova, No. 25 Kaia Kanepi losing to Ekaterina Makarova.

Defending champion Kim Clijsters is on the other half of the draw and advanced to the third round on Wednesday along with top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki, No. 3 Victoria Azarenka and former No. 1-ranked Jelena Jankovic.

Clijsters will next face longtime friend Daniela Hantuchova in the third round, and a win there could set up a fourth-round match against French Open champion Li Na, a rematch of the 2011 Australian final.

On the bottom half of the men's draw, No. 2 Rafael Nadal advanced without much trouble from his injured right knee or from German veteran Tommy Haas in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win. Four-time champion Roger Federer didn't even need to pick up a racket because Andreas Beck withdrew from their second-round match.

LONDON (AP) -Resisting the lure of Paris for the sake of his family, David Beckham pledged his future to America's Major League Soccer on Wednesday by signing a new two-year contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The 36-year-old midfielder had been courted by leading clubs across Europe in the months before his initial five-year Galaxy deal ran out in December, with Paris Saint-Germain's wealthy Qatari owners offering the most lucrative deal.

But Beckham turned down around $12 million-a-year with the glamorous French capital club for a less lucrative base salary at the Galaxy, which was previously paying him at least $6.5 million-a-year.

For the former England captain, whose career at Manchester United and Real Madrid turned him into a celebrity icon who transcended sport, the deal wrapped up on Wednesday in Los Angeles could be the last of his playing career.

"This was an important decision for me," Beckham said in a statement. "I had many offers from clubs from around the world, however, I'm still passionate about playing in America and winning trophies with the Galaxy."

It took until November, though, to collect his first winners' medal in the United States, delivering the Galaxy's first MLS Cup since 2005. It followed Premier League, La Liga and Champions League triumphs during his career in Europe.

Beckham left Europe in 2007, making the surprise decision to join the Galaxy from Real Madrid.

"I've seen first hand how popular soccer is now in the States and I'm as committed as ever to growing the game here," Beckham said. "My family and I are incredibly happy and settled in America and we look forward to spending many more years here."

Beckham's England career has effectively ended after making 115 appearances - the most for an outfield player. But he is targeting a spot in Britain's Olympic football team later this year, with the games being hosted in his native London.

By staying at the Galaxy, Beckham can be confident of a regular starting place in Bruce Arena's team, which might not have been the case at PSG or one of the English Premier League clubs that was pursuing the hottest brand in global football.

The Galaxy, though, knows how close it came to losing the player who has brought an international spotlight on the after scoring 11 goals in 74 appearances.

"I am thrilled that David has chosen to rejoin the Galaxy, especially as he had numerous options where he could continue his career," Arena said. "I felt that he was one of the best players in all of MLS last season and we could not have achieved the success that we did without him. We look forward to trying to replicate that success this season with David once again in a Galaxy uniform."

It is a jersey that the Galaxy said is the best-selling in the MLS and "one of the best in the world. "And it will continue to have Beckham's name emblazoned across the back of replica kits in sports shops from the Americas to Australasia.

"There has been much speculation in the past four months on where David was going to play and we did not get caught up in this and remained focused on re-signing him," said Tim Leiweke, president of team owner Anschutz Entertainment Group. "David had many options and we are pleased he felt comfortable, not only with our organization but also with Los Angeles, and will remain an important part of our club, our AEG family and our city."

The talks with Leiweke intensified after Beckham turned down PSG's offer at the start of January, with Beckham represented by manager and business partner, Simon Fuller, the creator of reality TV hit "American Idol."

"When David and I discussed making the move from Real Madrid to the LA Galaxy back in 2007, our minds were firmly focused on the massive opportunity of helping to grow soccer in the United States," Fuller said. "We have made great progress over the past five years in raising the profile of soccer domestically and the MLS on a worldwide stage, and we are encouraged by all the results."

From having 12 teams in 2006, the MLS now boasts a league with 19 sides while nine new football specific grounds have been built during Beckham's first five years.

"Clearly this is an ongoing mission and this new deal confirms our commitment to continuing our journey and making sure the world's biggest sport, soccer, continues to grow in the world's most passionate sports loving nation, the USA," Fuller said.
