Netgear intros sharing-savvy N750 Premium Edition router, powerline and WiFi adapters for media fans

Netgear intros sharingsavvy N750 Premium Edition router, powerline and WiFi adapters for media fans

Netgear is giving its home networking the same sort of tuneup going into the fall that you'd give your car -- not a complete overhaul, but enough to keep it running in top form. Headlining the pack, the N750 Premium Edition router you're looking at above upgrades the original N750 through a better ability to play with others: the dual-band WiFi hotspot's ReadyShare file access expands to the cloud, while its USB support now envelops Apple's AirPrint and Time Machine as well as TiVo Storage. Media sharing mavens also get their own, more specific add-ons. The Powerline Media Extender can pipe audio (and USB printing or storage) over a 200Mbps link, with a major emphasis on AirPlay streaming; the N900 4-port WiFi Adapter is a slightly less exotic, 450Mbps wireless-to-Ethernet bridge for multi-device home theaters. If Netgear's refresh is tempting enough to prompt a trade-up, you can snag the N750 Premium Edition immediately for $120 or wait until September and October for the respective launches of the N900 adapter for $80 and the Powerline Music Extender in its single pack ($99) or dual-device starter kit ($139) editions.

Adolescent pot use leaves lasting mental deficits; Developing brain susceptible to lasting damage from exposure to marijuana

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? The persistent, dependent use of marijuana before age 18 has been shown to cause lasting harm to a person's intelligence, attention and memory, according to an international research team.

Among a long-range study cohort of more than 1,000 New Zealanders, individuals who started using cannabis in adolescence and used it for years afterward showed an average decline in IQ of 8 points when their age 13 and age 38 IQ tests were compared. Quitting pot did not appear to reverse the loss either, said lead researcher Madeline Meier, a post-doctoral researcher at Duke University. The results appear online Aug. 27 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The key variable in this is the age of onset for marijuana use and the brain's development, Meier said. Study subjects who didn't take up pot until they were adults with fully-formed brains did not show similar mental declines. Before age 18, however, the brain is still being organized and remodeled to become more efficient, she said, and may be more vulnerable to damage from drugs.

"Marijuana is not harmless, particularly for adolescents," said Meier, who produced this finding from the long term Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study. The study has followed a group of 1,037 children born in 1972-73 in Dunedin, New Zealand from birth to age 38 and is led by Terrie Moffitt and Avshalom Caspi, psychologists who hold dual appointments at Duke and the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London.

About 5 percent of the study group were considered marijuana-dependent, or were using more than once a week before age 18. A dependent user is one who keeps using despite significant health, social or family problems.

At age 38, all of the study participants were given a battery of psychological tests to assess memory, processing speed, reasoning and visual processing. The people who used pot persistently as teens scored significantly worse on most of the tests. Friends and relatives routinely interviewed as part of the study were more likely to report that the persistent cannabis users had attention and memory problems such as losing focus and forgetting to do tasks.

The decline in IQ among persistent cannabis users could not be explained by alcohol or other drug use or by having less education, Moffitt said.

While 8 IQ points may not sound like a lot on a scale where 100 is the mean, a loss from an IQ of 100 to 92 represents a drop from being in the 50th percentile to being in the 29th, Meier said. Higher IQ correlates with higher education and income, better health and a longer life, she said. "Somebody who loses 8 IQ points as an adolescent may be disadvantaged compared to their same-age peers for years to come," Meier said.

Laurence Steinberg, a Temple University psychologist who was not involved in the research, said this study is among the first to distinguish between cognitive problems the person might have had before taking up marijuana, and those that were apparently caused by the drug. This is consistent with what has been found in animal studies, Steinberg added, but it has been difficult to measure in humans.

Animal studies involving nicotine, alcohol and cocaine have shown that chronic exposures before the brain is fully developed can lead to more dependence and long-term changes in the brain. "This study points to adolescence as a time of heightened vulnerability," Steinberg said. "The findings are pretty clear that it is not simply chronic use that causes deficits, but chronic use with adolescent onset."

What isn't possible to know from this study is what a safer age for persistent use might be, or what dosage level causes the damage, Meier said. After many years of decline among US teens, daily marijuana use has been seen to increase slightly in the last few years, she added. Last year, for the first time, US teens were more likely to be smoking pot than tobacco.

"The simple message is that substance use is not healthy for kids," Avshalom Caspi said via email from London. "That's true for tobacco, alcohol, and apparently for cannabis."

relationships - Talk About Marriage

Relationships are like jobs in the sense that you trade commodities, like time for money. Some relationships pay better than others. Some relationships are easier and others harder. Some relationships require specialized skills, while others require the tenacity to endure things that most other people would refuse to do. A doctor required a lot of education to they demand much more pay and can also pick and choose a lot more conditions of work than a manual laborer can. But its probably a lot easier to find a laborers work than a doctors.

A relationship with a man that has children by previous partners has less to offer a prospective partner - he has less time and attention to give and offers lower priorities to a partner (his children will be of a higher priority than his partner).

So an average girl that doesnt have children that can pick between this man, or the man who has no children, is usually better off picking the partner than has more time and energy to meet her needs - the one without children.

The opposite can be true also. A woman with issues that might detract from her value, such as a mild mental illness, physical disability or lower social status, might be seen as acceptable by that man with children because his overall relationship potential matches hers.

Like jobs, relationships can be in competition with each other - if when in a job you happen to see another job that offers more money for the same work, you'd be crazy not to go for that job right? Only you dont want to let your current employer know you are seeking another job. Or if you are offered another job that pays better and has better benefits, you might try to get a promotion from your current employer, competing one against the other.

Just like with work, some relationships are abuse systems, designed to tear down the self esteem and value until a person is no longer worth anything to anyone and cannot survive outside of this system - or so they think.

Edited to change male/female roles.

Indian govt faces backlash over Internet blocking

India on Friday defended itself against accusations of heavy-handed online censorship, saying it had been successful in blocking content blamed for fuelling ethnic tensions.

The government over the past week has ordered Internet service providers to block 309 webpages, images and links on sites including Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, news channel ABC of Australia and Qatar-based Al-Jazeera.

The orders were an effort to halt the spread of "hateful" material and rumours that Muslims planned to attack students and workers who have migrated from the northeast region to live in Bangalore and other southern cities.

"We have met with success. These pages were a threat to India's national security and we demanded their immediate deletion," Kuldeep Singh Dhatwalia, a spokesman for India's home ministry, told AFP.

"Spreading rumours to encourage violence or cause tension will not be tolerated. The idea is not to restrict communication."

But Twitter users, legal experts and analysts criticised the government's approach, which appeared to have resulted in only partial blocking of material, much of which was still accessible.

"The officials who are trusted with this don't know the law or modern technology well enough," Pranesh Prakash, programme manager at the Centre for Internet and Society research group, told AFP.

"It is counter-productive. I accuse them of monumental incompetence, given that the main problem is that they are getting really bad advice.

"I hope that this fiasco shows the folly of excessive censorship and encourages the government to make better use of social networks and technology to reach out to people."

Among the content blocked were photographs by AFP and other news agencies from Myanmar in the British Daily Telegraph, a parody Twitter account pretending to be from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and dozens of YouTube videos.

ABC issued a statement saying it was "surprised by the action" after content on its website about unrest in Myanmar between Muslims and Buddhists was included on the blocking list.

Photographs of clashes in Myanmar are thought to have been circulated on the Internet with fake captions claiming the scenes were from the northeastern Indian state of Assam, where 80 people have died in recent ethnic violence.

Vivek Sood, senior Supreme Court lawyer and an author on Internet legalisation, said he believed the government was acting unlawfully in blocking the online material.

"It's completely illegal under the Indian IT Act," he told The Economic Times. "It's a gross abuse of power by the government."

Indian journalist Kanchan Gupta, who is often critical of the government, had his Twitter account targeted by a government blocking order in a move he called a "political vendetta".

The government has blamed Internet activity for fanning fears that resulted in tens of thousands of migrants fleeing back to the northeast last week from Bangalore and elsewhere.

Al Jazeera webpages on the blocking list, including a report on the exodus from Bangalore, appeared unaffected by the government orders, the channel's Delhi bureau chief Anmol Saxena told AFP.

Ministers earlier complained they had not received cooperation from websites and social network groups.

The government on Thursday said Twitter had agreed to remove six fake accounts parodying Prime Minister Singh.

United States State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said that as India "seeks to preserve security, we are urging them also to take into account the importance of freedom of expression in the online world."

Fla. prepares for Isaac on eve of GOP convention

MIAMI (AP) ? Officials organized shelters and urged vacationers to leave the Florida Keys as Tropical Storm Isaac approached on Saturday, though preparations farther north focused on getting ready for the Republican National Convention.

Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency to make sure local and state agencies would be ready. The governor said during a media briefing that delegates were being told on how to stay safe during a storm, and officials were ready for storm surge, bridge closures and other problems that could arise during the convention. He also said he was in close communication with local, state and federal agencies, as well as convention officials.

"We are a hospitality state. We know how to take care of people and we want to ensure their safety," Scott said Saturday.

A hurricane warning had been issued for the Keys, though it was still a sunny day in Tampa. Forecast models show Isaac won't hit Tampa head-on, but the storm will still likely lash the city with rain and strong winds just as the convention ramps up. Protests were to start in full force on Sunday afternoon, and demonstrators have vowed that they will make their presence known rain or shine.

Isaac was blamed for at least three deaths after dousing flood-prone Haiti and was expected to scrape eastern Cuba on Saturday. It was forecast to hit the Keys late Sunday or early Monday, and it then could bring stormy conditions to Florida's west coast before moving to the Panhandle.

Still, the storm was days away from the Panhandle. It was sunny and breezy on the beach Saturday in Pensacola, with people out strolling and playing in the sand. Condo associations told people to move furniture inside, but full-scale preparations hadn't yet begun. Waves weren't yet big enough for surfers.

In the Keys, officials said they would open storm shelters and urged vacationers to leave. State officials warned Isaac was a massive storm ? even though the eye may not pass over Tampa, tropical storm-force winds extended 230 miles from the center. Key West International Airport was also halting all flights at 7 p.m. Saturday until the storm had passed. As of Saturday morning, 10 flights had been cancelled at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport due to Isaac. Three of the flights were to and from Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

At Miami International Airport, seven flights were cancelled Saturday, including six to and from Port-au-Prince as well as one departure flight to Key West. Airport spokesman Greg Chin said all flights stop only when sustained winds reach 50 mph and the Federal Aviation Administration tower closes and flights cannot be directed. Otherwise, it is the airlines' decision whether to operate flights.

Officials were handing out sandbags to residents in the Tampa area, which often floods when heavy rainstorms hit. Sandbags also were being handed out in Homestead, 20 years after Hurricane Andrew devastated the community there. Otherwise, however, convention preparations were moving ahead as usual.

Groups including Code Pink, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the AFL-CIO union and Planned Parenthood have already started arriving in Tampa, regardless of the forecast.

Police said even heavy rain could reduce the protesters' ranks, and could also bring relief from another worry: extreme heat.

Flooding and beach erosion is also a concern for southwest Florida. The hurricane warning included the west coast of Florida from Bonita Beach southward.

Russia, US spar over threat posed by Syria's chemical weapons

? A daily summary of global reports on security issues.

An unnamed Russian official told leading Russian daily Kommersant that "confidential dialogue" with the Syrian regime has assured Moscow that President Bashar al-Assad will not use chemical weapons against the opposition in the country's civil war and that he remains capable of keeping them secure.

The disclosure was a response to President Obama's threat earlier this week of "enormous consequences" for the Assad regime if it seemed to be preparing to utilize its chemical weapons arsenal. "We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is [if] we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized," Obama said, according to NBC News. "That would change my calculus."

According to the Kommersant report, the same Russian official said that Moscow thought it "entirely probable" that the US would act, Reuters reports.

Russia has vehemently opposed any outside intervention in Syria, blocking three United Nations Security Council resolutions to take stronger action against the Assad regime. Moscow's concern is that the US is using the threat of chemical weapons as an excuse for intervening in Syria militarily. Damascus shares those concerns. The Washington Post reports that Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil said yesterday, ?If this excuse does not work, [the US] will look for another excuse."

QUIZ ? Think you know the Middle East? Take our geography quiz.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said two days ago that only the Security Council could authorize action against Syria and urged the international community not to try to impose "democracy by bombs," according to a separate Reuters report.

According to the first Reuters report cited here, Russia said that after a Syrian official warned it could employ chemical weapons against "external aggressors," Russia told Damascus that "even the threat to employ the arsenal was unacceptable." Last month, Syria publicly acknowledged for the first time that it had chemical and biological weapons, and said that if other countries tried to intervene, it could use them.

The Washington Post reports that some analysts have voiced their disapproval of Obama's remarks, fearing that they will be interpreted as a message that the US will not take action unless chemical weapons are engaged ? rendering the use of heavy weapons, for example, permissible.

?I don?t like his formulation at all. It inadvertently tells the Syrians they can get away with anything but chemical weapons,? said Robert Satloff, executive director of the nonpartisan Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

The unusually direct US warning on Syria?s weapons of mass destruction echoes discussion of the ?red lines? that Iran must not cross in developing its disputed nuclear program.

Iran has carefully assembled nearly all the resources it needs to build a bomb without crossing the boundaries that the United States and others have drawn ? such as the expulsion of international nuclear inspectors or the enrichment of uranium to levels that would fuel a nuclear bomb.

According to the Washington Post, the US is tracking at least four chemical weapons sites in Syria. It is concerned not only that the regime might use the weapons, but that the weapons might end up in Hezbollah's or Al Qaeda's hands amid the chaos of the civil war.

A senior Western official told the Post they've seen "no change" so far in either the location or level of safeguards on the weapons.

PFT: Sanchez not ready to press 'panic button'

tim-tebow2Getty Images

The Jets have made it widely known that they?ll be using the Wildcat this year.? But what if they actually won?t be using it at all?

They?ve hired former Dolphins coach Tony Sparano, who four years ago bedeviled the Patriots with the surprise unveiling of the NFL?s version of the alternative attack, which works best when the players in the base offense remain on the field.? In September 2008, the Dolphins slapped it together in the week preceding a game in New England ? and they scored four touchdowns on six plays with Ronnie Brown taking the snap in shotgun formation, Ricky Williams lining up as a flanker who would come in motion and either get the ball on a handoff or (in that specific game) not get the ball on a handoff, and quarterback Chad Pennington split wide as a receiver.

Since then, it?s been used by several other teams, even though there has been a sense in more recent seasons that the Wildcat has run its course.? In other incarnations, the Wildcat entailed actually removing the starting quarterback from the field and using a different signal-caller.?? The Eagles did it with Mike Vick (to the chagrin of Donovan McNabb).? The Jets did it with Brad Smith.? Even the Dolphins did it with Pat White, a second-round draft bust taken only months after Miami?s starting-quarterback-stays-on-the-field Wildcat wowed the league.

Tebow has worked with a similar, but different, approach during his two seasons in Denver, lining up in shotgun with a tailback to his side.? The base play is a simple read-option, with the ball going to the running back if the defensive end on the side of the tailback comes wide or staying in Tebow?s hands, with the quarterback running to where the defensive end was if he bites on the handoff and crashes toward what would have been the point of attack.

From that basic look, Tebow can also pass after faking the handoff, as he did on the only play from scrimmage in overtime against the Steelers in January.

If that?s what the Jets will be using, it?s not the Wildcat.? So what will the Jets be using?

There?s a reason, in our view, for the Jets to be so secretive about their practices entailing what they?re calling the ?Wildcat.?? There?s a reason, in our view, for the Jets to have not even broken out the Wildcat (or, as the case may be, the ?TeBone?) in preseason games.? And there?s a reason, in our view, for the Jets to be spending so much time talking about how preparing for the Wildcat will suck time away from preparing for the base offense.

We (and, really, for something potentially as harebrained as this I should say, ?I?) think that, when the Jets host the Bills on September 9, what they use as the ?Wildcat? package will neither be the Wildcat nor the Tebow read-option base offense.

Consider this.? The Bills new quarterbacks coach is David Lee.? He?s the same David Lee who was the quarterbacks coach in Miami in (yep) 2008.? Though Sparano gets the credit for the Miami version of the Wildcat, his offensive coordinator (Dan Henning) called the attack that accounted for 28 points in the 38-13 thrashing of the Pats ?the David Lee Special.?? (That?s straight from Tim Layden?s Blood, Sweat and Chalk, easily the best modern compendium of football analysis.)? It was Lee who had pitched the ?Wild Hog? offense he?d used at Arkansas with Darren McFadden to Henning on the flight home from a 31-10 loss at Arizona only a week earlier.

And it?s Lee who now is working for the team the Jets will face in Week One and Week 17.

Chances are that David Lee knows how to stop the David Lee Special.? Chances are that the Jets won?t be using it.

Last year, Pats coach Bill Belichick showed not once but twice that he knows how to shut down the Broncos TeBone offense.? And, as always, the Jets play the Pats twice.? Chances are that the Jets won?t be using the attack Tebow ran in Denver.

Then there are the Dolphins, who have plenty of guys on defense who were on the team when Sparano ran the show and Lee coached the quarterbacks and the Dolphins used both the true Wildcat and the short-lived and ill-fated Pat White version of the read-option.? Since the Jets also will face Miami twice per year, chances are that the Jets won?t be giving the Dolphins any looks that they may have seen in practice over the past few seasons.

So if it?s not the Wildcat or the TeBone per se, what will the Jets be using?? Maybe it?ll be the true single wing, a shell-game of an offense with a direct snap to Tebow and guys like Shonn Greene as the tailback and John Conner assuming the role of what was/is the ?quarterback? in the offense, lined up not far behind the gap in the two tackles of the unbalanced line ? and ready to blow up whomever stands between Tebow or Greene and the secondary.

Throw in Santonio Holmes as the single wingback in the ?single wing,? and Holmes can play the role of Demaryius Thomas getting single coverage, if/when Tebow fakes a handoff and musters a reasonably accurate throw.

The point is that the Jets are smart enough to know that the teams they?ll face in six out of 16 games are smart enough to know how to defend the Wildcat and/or the TeBone.? With Mark Sanchez leaving the field and Tebow entering from the sideline (unless the big secret is that the Jets plan to use Tebow as a fullback or tight end in the base offense), the Jets need a genuine element of surprise.

The surprise could be that, once Tebow enters the game, the offense that opposing defenses see will be nothing like what they expected to see.

Boehner to House GOP: Play offense on Medicare

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Speaker John Boehner is urging rank-and-file House Republicans to go on offense over Medicare as Democrats argue that the GOP presidential ticket of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan would end the government-run health care program that seniors have embraced for decades.

In a conference call with members Tuesday night, Boehner pushed back against both the Democratic criticism and the unnamed GOP strategists who fret that Ryan's plans for Medicare will hurt GOP candidates, especially in battleground states with significant numbers of seniors such as Florida, Iowa and Pennsylvania.

The Ryan budget, backed by House Republicans, would scrap the current Medicare system in favor of a voucher program for those under 55 today. The plan also calls for gradually raising the Medicare retirement age from 65 to 67.

"The pundits are buzzing that with Paul on the ticket, the Democrats are going to attack us on Medicare. Well, here's a news flash: They were gonna do that anyway," Boehner told lawmakers. "The best defense on Medicare is a good offense. And Paul Ryan gives us the ability to play offense."

Republicans point out that President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, which remains unpopular, cut Medicare by about $700 billion. They also argue that Ryan's budget tackles a long-simmering issue Democrats have failed to address ? the fate of an entitlement program facing insolvency in 2024.

"We want this fight not just because Obamacare raided Medicare by $700 billion, but also because Republicans are the only ones who've taken action to save this program," Boehner said.

Ryan and Republicans omit the fact that his budget leaves Obama's cuts in place.

On Wednesday afternoon, House Democratic leaders held a conference call with their members and pressed them to respond to the Republican criticism over the Medicare cuts.

Specifically, the leaders urged members to explain that the cuts would not come from benefits, and the health overhaul law would mean seniors pay less for drugs.

Democrats stressed in the call that lawmakers should argue that the voucher system could mean seniors pay more for their health care.

Congressional aides provided details about the calls anonymously because they were private discussions among lawmakers.

On the Republican call, which the leadership frequently arranges for members during the August break, Boehner also urged lawmakers to remain on offense on the issue of jobs and the economy.

But since Romney announced Ryan as his running mate on Saturday, the political debate has shifted from the economy to Medicare. Romney's campaign unveiled an ad Tuesday criticizing Obama for raiding the program to pay for his health care plan.

The president answered back Wednesday during a campaign stop in Iowa, arguing that Romney and Ryan would end Medicare "as we know it" while countering that his steps have strengthened the program.

"I have made reforms that have saved millions of seniors with Medicare hundreds of dollars on their prescription drugs," Obama said. "I have proposed reforms that will save Medicare money by getting rid of wasteful spending in the health care system ? reforms that will not touch your Medicare benefits ? not by a dime."

The House has passed the Ryan budget twice, but the blueprint went nowhere in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

But if Romney wins in November and Republicans seize control of the Senate, the budget could be implemented. The blueprint slashes spending for safety-net programs for the poor, remakes Medicare and cuts personal and corporate taxes while pushing the deficit down to a manageable level over a decade.

Democratic candidates have been linking GOP incumbents who voted for the Ryan budget to the vice presidential candidate and his blueprint.

"The Ryan-Bass Plan would end Medicare as we know it and gut the key investments we need to grow the economy and strengthen the middle class ? all in order to pay for massive new tax cuts for millionaires, big oil companies, and corporations that ship jobs overseas," Annie Kuster, a Democrat looking to unseat Republican Rep. Charles Bass of New Hampshire, said Wednesday.

Separately, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., sent a memo to Democrats urging them to challenge Ryan's claim that he is a deficit hawk and repeatedly link Romney to the Ryan budget in its entirety.

Schumer cited Ryan's vote for President George W. Bush's tax cuts, his support for two unfunded wars and his vote against the deficit reduction plan proposed by former Republican Sen. Alan Simpson and Democrat Erskine Bowles.

"The dirty little secret about the Ryan plan is that it inflicts its damage to Medicare without achieving its stated purpose of reducing the debt," Schumer wrote.

Researchers develop DNA sequencing tests for hereditary diseases

ScienceDaily (Aug. 16, 2012) ? Scientists at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ-NJMS) have developed new DNA sequencing tests that hold significant promise for decreasing costs associated with diagnosing cancer and hereditary diseases, including cystic fibrosis.

Officials at the New Jersey Department of Health approved the use of the new Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Carrier and Diagnosis Test, which was created at the Institute for Genomic Medicine at UMDNJ-NJMS. Using a semiconductor mechanism that was developed by San Francisco-based Ion Torrent, the microchip tests the entire gene for mutations. IGM now offers this certified Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory service for hospitals as well as obstetrics and gynecology practices throughout the Garden State.

According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation web site, "More than 10 million Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene." This chronic disease impacts the lungs and the digestive system. It occurs when a child inherits one defective CF gene from each parent. Statistics show New Jersey averages 125,000 births of children who are diagnosed with cystic fibrosis annually.

"We believe the adaptation of this new sequencing technology will drastically improve our ability to analyze genetic disorders," said Marvin N. Schwalb, PhD, director of the Institute for Genomic Medicine. "Traditional CF sequencing testing costs thousands of dollars making the test unavailable for carrier screening. This new test costs less than $200. Most importantly, the genetic carrier test we developed improves the diagnosis rate to 98 percent. While the test provides significant improvement for all populations, the improved rate is particularly valuable for minorities because current carrier screening methods only detects approximately 65% of mutations in these populations."

The new technology provides many advances including the ability to test as many as 96 samples on a single platform and the fact that the equipment cost 1/10 as much as the previous technology.

IGM has developed another test, which was also approved by the NJHSS, for mitochondrial DNA. Mutations in mitochondria cause a wide variety of diseases, such eye and neuromuscular system disorders and possible cancer.

Schwalb, a professor of Pediatrics, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at NJMS, said, "We are proud of the fact that the IGM is a world leader in the advancement of genetic diagnosis. DNA sequencing will keep us very busy for a while. In the state of New Jersey, there is nothing that compares to this advancement and this is just the beginning."

Sobbing Rihanna recalls confusion of Chris Brown beating

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A sobbing Rihanna has told Oprah Winfrey she felt protective of boyfriend Chris Brown after he beat her up more than three years ago and was concerned that everyone would think of him as a monster.

The "Umbrella" singer, in a rare emotional TV interview set to air on Sunday detailing her thoughts about the highly publicized 2009 assault, told Winfrey that the days and weeks after incident left her confused and ashamed.

"It was embarrassing, it was humiliating," Rihanna told Winfrey in the interview, excerpts of which were released on Thursday. "I lost my best friend. Everything I knew switched, switched in a night, and I couldn't control that.

"It was a weird, confusing space to be in. Because as angry as I was - as angry and hurt and betrayed - I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help. And who's going to help him?

"Nobody's going to say he needs help. Everybody's going to say he's a monster, without looking at the source. And I was more concerned about him," she added.

Rihanna, now 24, was left battered and bruised from the beating by Brown in Los Angeles on the eve of the Grammy Awards in February 2009. Brown, 19 at the time and a rising R&B singer, pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced to five years probation, community service and domestic violence counseling.

He publicly apologized, but his career and public image took a dive. Brown's career has since recovered, and he won his first Grammy award earlier this year for the hit album "F.A.M.E".

Rihanna has rarely opened up emotionally in public about the events of that night.

Winfrey, who interviewed Rihanna in the singer's Barbados home, said in a promotion for Sunday's show that she had started with a fixed idea of Rihanna based on her provocative music videos and sexually charged lyrics, but her view quickly changed.

"I thought she was going to be kind of a badass, kind of a hard-edged rocker, pop woman. Nothing could have been further from the truth," Winfrey said.

The full interview will be broadcast on Sunday on Winfrey's OWN cable network.

Phelps goodbye as Ennis lights up Olympic Games

Michael Phelps bowed out of swimming with a final flourish on Saturday as poster-girl Jessica Ennis crowned one of British sport's most memorable days with the London Games' signature moment.

As Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake made their first appearance on the track, Phelps left clutching his 18th gold -- and 22nd medal overall -- after the 4x100m medley relay, the climax to races in the Aquatics Centre pool.

But the night's biggest roars were reserved for Ennis, who confirmed heptathlon gold with a surging 800m win that raised the 80,000-capacity Olympic Stadium crowd in a spine-tingling ovation.

Her victory was the highlight of a spectacular day eight for the hosts, who won six golds -- their most on a single day of Olympic competition for more than 100 years.

"I'm just so chuffed, I can't believe it," said the tearful Ennis. "After the javelin I knew I was in for a good score but I couldn't let myself believe it until I crossed the finish line."

As Ennis basked in the stadium applause, Britain's Greg Rutherford was a surprise winner in the long jump. And Mo Farah then sent the crowd into delirium when he won the men's 10,000m.

"It's never going to get better than this, this is the best moment of my life," said Farah.

Thanks to the triple haul -- Britain's most on one day of Olympic athletics -- and wins in rowing and cycling, the home team finished the day third on the medals table on 14 golds, behind the United States (26) and China (25).

"Our finest Olympic hour" was the headline in The Sunday Times, while The Sun tabloid called the gold-medallists, "The Six Pack".

In the pool relay, "Baltimore Bullet" Phelps, swimming the butterfly leg, made up more than half-a-second over his second 50m as he reeled in leaders Japan. Nathan Adrian finished the job with an explosive freestyle close.

The race ended the greatest swimming career in Olympic history, after Phelps' unmatched eight gold medals at Beijing 2008. In London, he outstripped Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina as the most decorated Olympian.

"It's tough to put into words right now," Phelps said. "I did everything I wanted to do."

Earlier, Sun Yang took more than three seconds off his own 1500m world record to seal China's fifth swimming gold -- making it their best Olympics in the pool.

Sun, who flirted with a shock disqualification when he dived in well before the rest of the field, smashed the water repeatedly and cried tears of joy after the race, before getting out and bowing to the stands.

Dutch speedster Ranomi Kromowidjojo completed a sprint double with victory in the women's 50m freestyle, and Missy Franklin led the United States to a 4x100m medley gold in a world record time of 3min 52.05sec.

The win meant the United States finished the pool events with 16 swimming golds, including four for the 17-year-old Franklin, their newest superstar.

South Africa's Oscar Pistorius became the first double amputee to compete in Olympic track athletics as he sprinted into the 400m semis on his specially made, carbon-fibre blades.

"It's just an experience to be here. It's a dream come true," said Pistorius.

Defending 100m champion Bolt clocked 10.09sec in his first round heat for the blue riband event of the Games while Jamaican compatriot Blake timed 10sec.

However, both men were upstaged in front of 80,000 people at the Olympic Stadium by the 9.88sec run by America's Ryan Bailey.

"I expected it, I'm running well, I'm happy, training is great. Reaction was good," said Bolt, whose build-up to the Games had been hit by a number of worrying niggles.

Meanwhile, Serena Williams won the 'Golden Slam' -- all four Grand Slam titles, plus Olympic gold -- with a thumping 6-0, 6-1 win over Maria Sharapova. She will also play Sunday's women's doubles final with her sister Venus.

Britain won two more rowing titles, and also smashed the women's team pursuit cycling world record -- for the third time this week -- to claim their fourth gold out of five so far in the Velodrome.

In badminton, Li Xuerui took the women's singles title before Chinese compariots Zhao Yunlei and Tian Qing claimed the women's doubles.

And in the day's final event, Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce retained her women's 100m title in 10.75sec, 0.03sec ahead of a lunging Carmelita Jeter.

step-parenting a teenage boy

by Teri
(Portland)

My step-son is 13. I've been around him since he was 6. In the last couple of years we've been clashing a little bit. Mostly trivial stuff. However, some things that are changing dramatically are his need to always sit next to his dad while watching tv and if I'm there he will sigh and make subtle gestures that he doesn't like it.

Other times he will step in front of me while walking down the street and push me aside so he can walk next to his dad. If we are planning a family event, he'll ask me if I'm going to attend. And today, I was in his room and I found a photograph of his family prior to me. It was folded in half so that his mom and his dad were pictured together, happy, smiling at him while he sits at his desk playing video games.

My reasoning says this is all normal, but what's bothering me is that he is becoming increasingly disinterested in me being there. I've been married to his father for 3 years now. I was not the cause for a breakup his my husband's first marriage. Please, is there any light at the end of the tunnel. What can I do to help turn this relationship around? thanks for listening, teri

Anthropology and The Definition of Marraige ? The Narcissistic ...

As an Anthropologist and Sociologist who has devoted her adult life, passion and career to the study of human culture and human organization / how we function as societies, the topics of gender and family and kinship are ones that I have studied with some rigor.? Likely more than most (save the professional scholars).
This whole issue that has arisen (thanks to fried chicken sammiches) of late has gotten my wheels spinning:? namely because it seems that the argument is focusing on morality or free speech.? What I think we tend to forget in our bubble of social opinions is the context from whence the definition of marriage in our culture came?and the context of marriage and relationships throughout history.? So many arguments about what defines a family and, quite frankly, pretty myopic arguments.

We all have a right to believe what we want.? But my inclinations as a scientist always take me back to the need to? objectively collect as much data as possible and eschewing my ethnocentrism (my preconceived notions about right and wrong based on my own insulated cultural experience) before coming to a conclusion.

It is in this vein that I hope to shed some light for whomever is interested on the sociocultural history of marriage and the anthropological perspective.? Since Anthropology IS the study of humans, I thought it the most appropriate objective perspective.

In 2004, The American Anthropological Association issued a statement regarding their position on the definition of marriage, as a response to inquiries about the legitimacy of same sex marriage:

The results of more than a century of anthropological research on households, kinship relationships, and families, across cultures and through time, provide no support whatsoever for the view that either civilization or viable social orders depend upon marriage as an exclusively heterosexual institution. Rather, anthropological research supports the conclusion that a vast array of family types, including families built upon same-sex partnerships, can contribute to stable and humane societies.

Here are some articles worth reading about the topic of marriage:

From the May 2004 Issue of Anthropology News, entitled: Gay Marriage and Anthropology. This article discusses historical examples of the definition and role of marriage and kinship over time:

http://faculty.usfsp.edu/jsokolov/2410gaymar1.htm,

Here is a paper from Yale Law School on the history of Same Sex Marriage that also spans many centuries and cultures

http://digitalcommons.law.yale.edu/fss_papers/1504/

Here is another scholarly article with several Anthropological definitions of marriage that have emerged over time:

http://www.umanitoba.ca/faculties/arts/anthropology/tutor/marriage/defining.html

And finally, the Wikipedia compendium on marriage with all sorts of colorful examples and perspectives:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage
I encourage everyone, regardless of their point of view on any topic to ?seek first to understand, then to be understood? (Thanks again Mr. Stephen Covey).?? It is only by this pursuit of understanding that we can effectively co-exist.? And we can?t help but co-exist?

The wage for just a hygienist inside a geographical location with several accredited hygienists will certainly be reduce in contrast to a hygienist someplace owning a handful of qualified hygienists. Similarly, to be a dentistry hygienist in a place with several other folks it?s likely you?ll generate much more.

dental hygienist salary

The actual tasks of a dental hygienist are very distinct from the actual responsibilities of a dental assistant. Hygienists are usually closely watched by a dental professional and they also carry out methods and also strategies which dental practitioners used to conduct years back. Generally, the particular tasks of a hygienists involves carrying out preventive dental care, giving dental help to dental practitioners in oral treatments, treating gum disease, as well as giving local anesthetic. Additionally, they need to tell individuals of appropriate dental health to be able to encourage oral health. Having dental hygienists for guidance will allow dental practitioners to concentrate and handle dental techniques that happen to be far more important.

In addition to these tips, there?s nothing that will help you maintain clean and stainless teeth like eating healthy fruits and vegetable along with regular brushing. Doing this alone can often be enough to completely eliminate the need for teeth whitening at your dentist.

How Elton John redeemed self from 'disgusting' past

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than 20 years ago singer-songwriter Elton John was, by his own admission, living a disgusting life of self-pity and drug abuse. Then he met Ryan White.

White was an American teenager who in 1984 contracted the virus that causes AIDS through a blood transfusion due to his hemophilia. He was expelled from school because of fear of the disease and became a vocal advocate of HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.

White died in April 1990 at the age of 18, but not before he had blazed a trail that would change the lives of thousands of people, and thousands more who came after his death, including the star piano player who befriended him.

"I used to sit in front of my CD player and listen ... and cry my eyes out, thinking, 'I'm a decent person, why can't I get well? Why can't I get better? I'm living the most disgusting life, I've no values anymore,'" John told Reuters in a recent interview.

"(Now), I'm the luckiest person in the world and it's all because one young boy and his family showed me what they were doing was right and what I was doing was disgusting."

John recently published his first book, "Love Is the Cure: On Life, Loss, and the End of AIDS," which is less autobiography and more an accounting of how far society and medicine have come in dealing with the disease and how far they still have to go.

But the book does recount details of the 65-year-old performer's own life and his addiction to cocaine and alcohol. He said the overall theme is of salvation -- his, as well as that of others whose worlds can be changed with a little compassion.

John has recorded mega-hits like "Candle in the Wind," won Grammys, an Oscar and a Tony. But he said White, his mother and sister had a more profound impact on him than musical glory.

NO SELF-ESTEEM

When he first met the Whites, John saw a group of people who should be angry because Ryan White had been ostracized for contracting the disease through a blood transfusion. Yet the teen and his family were just the opposite, giving their time and energy to help others with the disease.

"What was completely chiseled in my soul, was: ?You're leading a terrible life. You are a disgusting person,'" John said of himself. "I had no self-esteem whatsoever. I looked at Ryan; I looked at me, and the difference was a billion miles."

So John changed. By his own admission, he got clean and sober and has now been in a 19-year relationship with partner David Furnish, with whom he is raising a son, while continuing to perform around the world.

The British singer also became a vocal advocate for AIDS victims. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has raised and donated $275 million to hundreds of projects focusing on those at risk and marginalized in 55 countries.

John was a featured speaker at last month's International AIDS Conference in Washington, where researchers sounded hopeful that a vaccine was within reach.

Thanks to drugs that can control the virus, healthcare providers and people living with AIDS are better-equipped to battle the disease. New infections have fallen by 21 percent since the pandemic's peak in 1997 and advances in prevention promise to cut that rate even more. Still, as many as 34 million people worldwide are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus.

John is quick to say he does not know much about the science or research into HIV/AIDS. What he does know is how it affects people who continue to be stigmatized by it, and how becoming involved helped to redeem him.

"I could drop dead tomorrow and I would die a happy man because I have had my redemption. I can be proud of myself now, and God knows I wasn't in the past, and that's the terrible thing about addiction," he said.

"Three words changed my life: ?I need help.' ... There are some things in life that you cannot do on your own. It's much better to share and to reach out. I learned that lesson," John said.
