Oil tank explosion kills 1 worker, injures another

MYTON, Duchesne County ? An explosion at an oil storage tank facility in Uintah County killed one person and injured another. The fire is out and federal investigators are on their way to the oil field.

Two contract workers and one employee of Newfield Production were doing routine maintenance on one of the storage tanks Tuesday night, according to a company spokesman.

For some reason the storage tank, which is used to hold oil and other fluids that come out of the well, exploded around 8:30 p.m.

When deputies arrived, they found one contract worker deceased. The other contract worker was not injured. The Newfield employee was injured and taken to a hospital in Roosevelt. His condition was not immediately known.

"We've actually pulled everybody out of the area for approximately one half mile away. In the morning hours (investigators) will be coming in to conduct their investigation," said Sgt. Bevan Watkins of the Uintah County Sheriff's Office.

Newfield is the largest producer of crude oil in the state.
