Update: Initial TBI findings say Washington Co. inmate hanged himself

An inmate who died Friday at the Washington County Detention Center hanged himself, according to preliminary investigation results released Monday.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm said the agency would await a coroner's autopsy report before making a final determination in the death of Jay William Davis, 39, 151 Ridgecrest Road, Jonesborough, but preliminary findings indicated he hanged himself in the jail.

Washington County Sheriff Graybeal had issued a statement Friday about Davis's death, saying foul play was not suspected, but Graybeal did not elaborate on the cause of death.

Davis was being held in the center on domestic assault charges.
